Kathy Walmer - Executive Director

Kathy Walmer, Executive Director

Kathy Walmer is the Executive Director for Family Health Ministries and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Duke Global Health Institute. She has a passion for non-profit research, service, and education. Using her background as a clinical practitioner, Kathy currently guides a US staff of eight, a Haitian staff of 72 and manages a budget of $1.2M. She coordinates the Haiti Student Research Training  program which provides research opportunities to Duke undergraduate students for 8 weeks each summer in Haiti.

Kathy’s diverse background includes working as a pediatric nurse practitioner, running an adolescent health clinic, overseeing both government and industry-sponsored research and directing educational programs. In 2003, Kathy’s skills in maternal and child health came together. She became the first Executive Director for Family Health Ministries, focusing on the health and education of women and children in resource-poor communities.

Schatzi McCarthy, Research Director

Schatzi McCarthy is the FHM Research Director. She joined FHM in September 2013 after serving as the Associate Director of the Cervical Cancer Free NC initiative at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. Her cervical cancer prevention work includes preparation of a statewide coalition report titled “Cervical Cancer Prevention in North Carolina: Strengthening health systems and programs.”  She also served as a Senior Program Officer in Family Health International’s Research Group, managing their Contraceptive and Reproductive Health Technologies Research and Utilization Cooperative Agreement—a $125M initiative funded by USAID. She has over 20 years of program management experience and 12 years of research experience, working primarily in government and non-profit organizations. Other management experience includes strategic plan approval authority for NC Smart Start activities statewide and leadership of the NC Division of Public Health’s Early Intervention Branch data team. Her strength is an ability to find creative solutions to problems of implementation.

Missy Owen

Missy Owen, Global Health Research Associate

Missy Owen joined FHM in February 2005, as a missionary working in the community of Fondwa. Missy served as the FHM Community Liaison for over two years. She returned to work with FHM in March 2010 coordinating medical teams after the earthquake. In September, 2010 she started in her position as the In-Country Coordinator living in Leogane.  In August 2012, Missy returned to Durham to her new position  as the Global Health Research Associate working closely with the Blanchard Cervical Cancer Clinic Staff. Missy graduated from Indiana University Southeast with a BS in Nursing. She attended Duke Divinity School and graduated from Louisville Presbyterian Seminary with a Masters in Divinity. Missy is most known for her appearance in the film “The Road to Fondwa.

Kelly Dassow - Finance and Operations Mgr.

Kelly Dassow, Finance and Operations Manager

Kelly Dassow comes to FHM with a wealth of diverse experience in nonprofit management. Her background is in finance and data management, and she also spent several years working in fund development. She has previously worked with a host of mission-focused organizations, including Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont, the National Conference for Community and Justice, and (most recently) the Quixote Center in Washington DC. Kelly holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of Miami and is currently pursuing her MBA.
